Makeup Tips for Beautiful Eyes
Women are lucky: they can emphasize the natural beauty of their eyes with the help of makeup products. Shadows, liners, pencils and mascaras work in tandem to define and emphasize eyes of any shape, size or color. The trick is to know how to deploy these tools properly.
Here, shares top makeup tips for beautiful eyes.
Start with the Right Base
For any eye makeup look to stick, it’s important to start with a great foundation. Use an eyelid primer product, such as Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion, or a MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot. These tacky products will hold the shadows and liners in place all day long.
Master the Smoky Eye
A smoky eye look is perfect for nighttime (and the right daytime event). Apply a dark shadow to the lids, and use a neutral “transition” color in the crease of the eyelid to create a soft gradient of color. Then, blend the shadows out to diffuse the edges. Add a highlight color to the brow line, eyeliner to the upper and lower lash lines and finish with black mascara.
Pro tip: if you’re a beginner, look for “DIY” smoky eye kits. Try the Almay Intense I-Color Smoky-I Kit, which comes with three shadows and a guide of where to place each color.
Refine Your Eyeliner Technique
Makeup artists recommend dotting your upper lids with liner, then connecting the dots using a tiny eyeliner brush. This technique helps to softly define the lashline without being overpowering. You can use a cotton swab to push the liner outward at the corners of the eye.
Another eyeliner tip? Add white liner to the inner corners of the eye to make your eyes look more awake.
Find the Perfect Mascara
Mascaras are formulated to provide different effects: length, fullness, curl, separation. Some promise all of those results in one! After finding your preferred formula, apply the mascara to your upper lashes by moving the wand in a zigzag motion from root to tip. Use a light hand when applying the product to your lower lashes; use one less coat or skip it altogether.
Looking to experiment with a new formula? Try one of last year’s best-selling mascaras: L’Oreal’s Miss Manga.
Fill In Your Brows
Well-defined brows will frame your eyes and complement the rest of your makeup look. Try to strike the right balance between defining them and making them look too “manicured” or overdone.
If you have thin or patchy brows, gently fill them in with a brow powder or gel product close to your natural hair color. (Anastasia of Beverly Hills has a full line of brow products.) Seal in the powder or gel with a coat of clear brow mascara.
Healthy Eyes Are Beautiful
When using any makeup products, it’s incredibly important to be diligent about your health and safety. For example.
- Creamy or liquid eye makeup can be a petri dish for infection-causing bacteria; toss products after three months. If you develop an eye infection, throw out all eye makeup.
- Don’t share eye makeup. If possible, avoid store samples, which can be contaminated by multiple users.
- Only apply makeup to a clean face and eyelids.
- Avoid makeup with large chunks of glitter (which can get into the tear film and irritate your eyes).
- Remove all eye makeup before you go to sleep.
